This fascinating piece of history most probably dates to the late 1800s, during the period that German colonization of Africa after the Berlin Conference in 1884.  Germans there would bring back souvenirs, which in this case, takes the form of this hand-sword, called a Kaskara.   It is fit into a scabbard constructed of a small crocodile (genuine).  This type of sword is common to the Sudan region, an area relevant to German colonial interests.  The piece was purchased in a Hotel Buy a few years ago in the mid-west, having been a bring-back from a US Soldier serving in Germany during WWII.  Probably one of the most unique swords on the market, certainly one of a kind.
