This is an original WWI British Tanker's face mask, worn in early British tanks to protect the wearer from shrapnal, grit, and any other particulate matter that might be flying around on the inside of the tank.? Why wear what basically looks like a sleep mask for S&M airlines? :)? Well, the tanks operated by crews wearing these masks were so primitive, that the crew pretty much shared the interior of the tank with everything, including the engine.? Also, because anti-tank warfare was not well developed with the creation of deadly anti-tank rounds, a mask like this could indeed save the life (or vision) of a crew member, when their tank was hit by machine-gun fire.? These are extremely rare and undervalued, and make an outstanding display item.
