A fabulous example of the swordmaker's art, this sparkling beauty is as much a work of art as a saber. The handle features an art deco styled lion head, hand chased and wonderfully detailed. The ornately baroquely decorated guard is held in the lion's jaws, with pierced fangs through which the guard can be seen. The backstrap has an oakleaf and acorn theme, with hand carved details. The crossguard eagle is carved in fabulous relief, again with hand chasing, and with a baroque style surround. This is continued on the reverse crossguard with a vaulted area suitable for engraving. The metal fittings are richly fire gilt finished, and are reminiscent of ormalu figural designs found in museum statuary and furniture. The black grip is in mint, glossy condition. Perfectly complementing this exquisite grip is the genuine damascus blade, one of the finest that I've seen, and it is in beautiful condition. Lettered in gold is the wording 'Zur Erinnerung an meine Dienstzeit' (In remembrance of my service time). The scabbard displays its original factory glossy black finish with only minor signs of handling and use--the finish is at 98% or better. The portepee is still attached, and does show fraying but is solid. The saber is in near mint condition as you can see in the photographs. There is a black bit of staining to the crossguard on the eagle's right side, which could certainly be removed by a competant craftsman, but I've left it as found. One of the most ornate Army Officer's sabers that I've had the pleasure to offer, this piece is reminiscent of fire and ice, and would be the centerpiece of any collection. A wonderful and stunning piece, the epitome of the swordmaker's art!
